CPR Firsts' unbeaten run came to an end on Sunday at home to Polonia.
The result belied the Poles bottom of the table position, and was all
the more surprising given CPR's impressive recent performances against
NYAC and the Cyprians.
The early stages to the game where somewhat scrappy, with the home team
failing to get to grips with the Poles long ball play. And after 20
minutes it was the visitors who took the lead with a good strike from
the edge of the penalty area after The Whites failed to adequately
clear a cross. As the half progressed CPR's control of the game
steadily increased, yet for all of their possession there was a certain
lack of cutting edge and the Polonia keeper was rarely forced into a
save.
CPR's dominance in the second half continued as they pressed forward in
search of an equalizer, but with the Poles sitting deep and getting men
behind the ball clear cut chances where few and far between. With five
minutes remaining however the pressure finally told for the home team,
with Yannick equalizing at the far post after latching on to a low
cross from Shane. Almost immediately from the re-start Polonia made a
rare foray into their opponents half, and when the Polish striker went
down inside the box in somewhat innocuous fashion, a penalty was
awarded and the Poles where back in front. In the final minutes CPR
laid siege to the Polonia goal, throwing everyone forward in search of
another equalizer, only for Polonia to break forward and with an absent
defense grab an undeserved third goal with the last kick of the game.
