The firsts suffered an early scare against South Baisley United in the
cup, but came out as worthy 5-2 winners to reach the quarter
finals of the State Cup.
A sluggish start saw us give up two goals in
the first 15 minutes against the speedy and skillful team of Jamaicans.
The early sting spurred us into action though, and it didn't take long before
our superior talent, tactical play and organization paid dividends.
Caesar halved the deficit after some good work from Eli on the left,
and Javier grabbed the equalizer and his first CPR goal with a neat
finish into the corner when played in by Pat before half time.
We
continued where we left off in the second half, but lost Caesar to an
ankle injury early on. Luckily we had marathon man Joe Sullivan to come
off the bench and play up front. And the old man used his wise head
within minutes, meeting a perfectly placed Eli cross at the far post to
head us into the lead. With the Jamaicans now in total disarray, the
game got ugly at times as they tried to kick us off the park. We
commendably stayed calm under these attacks, and further increased our
lead with goals from Kevin, off a Joe/Jamaican assist, and the lively
Jay, who was cleverly played in by Kevin to complete the impressive
comeback.
