At an early morning 10am kick off, the Rangers reserves took on a lively Polonia reserve side at McCarren park in Williamsburg.
Seeking to revise the line-up before going into playoffs, the Whites reserves took on a slightly new look against the Poles with winger Shane Lennon dropping back into more of a wing back position. With the ref absent for the first half, the game got off to slow start. But it would be CPR who took first blood through the aforementioned Englishmen. Pushing up during a right-sided attack, Lennon struck a shot off the near post. He was able to collect his own rebound and seal the deal from close range. 1 - 0 CPR.
Defensively, the early part of the game saw CPR looking relatively solid at the back, with keeper Ben Roberts tipping the Poles single early shot over the crossbar.
With the Poles struggling to create clear cut chances, it was a surprise that they were able convert inside the first half. The pesky Polish playmaker found a yard of space outside the box and unleashed a low strike to the far post. Unsuccessful at closing the wily Pole down, the Rangers could only watch as the shot slipped under Roberts arms.
The second half saw the Rangers sure up defense with great midfield displays by Brettski, Andres, and Dan Riso, as well as solid defending by Dan Cohen, Lennon, and "Big Man" Rudd. On the attacking front, the Rangers' striker "Muzza" made several exciting forays behind the Polonia back line only to see his efforts sail just wide or fail to find a teammate at the back post.
The game ended 1 -1, but should have seen the Rangers take all three points. Hopefully, the mistakes have been exorcised from the team heading into playoffs.
